Festival Dispatches: MMFF Day 2

The Grave Bandits is an impressive, propulsive piece of popcorn entertainment. It’s so refreshing to see unfamiliar actors in a populist film. Way better than Tiktik. B+

In Nomine Matris is burdened by an overly dramatic third act but the film is a joyous celebration of womanhood and of a dance form which, even if foreign in origin, is perfectly suited to the Pinoy temperament. B+

MMFF shorts:

Manibela: Childish and crass. F

Obsesyon: Contrived. D

Ritwal: Atrocious. F

Kinse: Impressive technicals save an otherwise predictable narrative. C+

Sonata: Story of music as  redemption has been done a million times so I got nothing out of this. D

Tagad: Eight minutes is really too short for this interesting look into Cebuano skateboarding. B+
